SD 17: Tim Keller Earning Unprecedented Dem Support

Do you live in NM Senate District 17 in Albuquerque's SE Heights? Click here for a map of the District or visit this page at the website of the Bernalillo County and enter your address to determine your District. If you're a registered District 17 Democrat, it's incredibly important that you get out and vote in the Democratic primary on June 3rd.

The primary features a heated battle between reformer Tim Keller and long-time incumbent Shannon Robinson. Robinson has been the focus of a growing number of news reports highlighting his highly questionable actions related to getting funding for the UNM Rugby Club he coaches. He's also been called on neglecting the needs of his District while focusing instead on serving the powerful.

This is a race that pits a change candidate who will fight to clean up government and work hard to bring positive improvements to his District against an insider who's gotten way too comfortable in his seat and who fights hardest for the well-connected and the status quo. Given the strongly Democratic demographics of Senate District 17, whoever wins the Dem primary will no doubt take the seat.

With the primary election nearing, challenger Tim Keller has earned the endorsement of key progressive Democrats, neighborhood and community leaders, as well as nearly a dozen Democratic groups in his run in the Democratic Primary for State Senate in District 17.

"The support Tim has received is unprecedented for a challenger," says veteran Democratic leader Richard Romero. "To me, it says that people believe that Tim represents democratic values of integrity and ethics. The voters in his district are looking for this sort of change."

Tim is also endorsed by Rey Garduno, the Albuquerque City Councilor who represents half of the district, and State Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino.

Organizations that have endorsed Tim include:

  • Albuquerque Teachers Federation
  • National Educational Association, New Mexico
  • New Mexico Professional Firefighters Association
  • Conservation Voters New Mexico
  • DFA-Democracy for New Mexico
  • ACORN, New Mexico
  • Hispano Round Table de Nuevo México
  • New Mexico Progressive Action
  • Albuquerque Area Firefighters Local 244
  • Sierra Club

Local neighborhood leaders who have endorsed Tim are:

  • Joanne Landry, Trumbull Neighborhood Association President
  • Enrique Cardiel, Neighborhood Leader, South San Pedro
  • Nancy Bearce, District 6 Neighborhood Coalition President
  • Charlie Bennet, Democrat Ward Chair, La Mesa Neighborhood

Tim Keller, a progressive Democrat from Albuquerque, is active in the Democrat Party, serving as a Ward Chair and as the Bernalillo County Party Parliamentarian. More can be found about Tim Keller at his website. Tim can be reached at tk@timkellerfornewmexico.com.

Whether you live in Tim's District or not, consider helping out with canvassing and phone banking in the final days of the campaign and on election day.

¡Todos Para Tim! Launches to Support Tim Keller

State Senate Candidate Gains Endorsements of Prominent Democrats

ALBUQUERQUE (Monday, May 5, 2008). Calling for change, local elected officials and neighborhood leaders will launch ¡Todos Para Tim! in support of Tim Keller’s candidacy for State Senate in District 17. City Councilor Rey Garduño, whose council district makes up part of Senate District 17, will host the kick-off event on Thursday, May 8 at his home.

“The support for my campaign is as diverse as my district—and I’m proud of that. We’re gaining momentum largely in part because more people are coming forward to say it’s time for change. I’m grateful to have the support of well respected Democrats and neighborhood leaders,” says Tim.

Local leaders have this to say:

Richard Romero, Former State Senator and Pro Tem: “We need to send a true Democrat like Tim to the Roundhouse. I know where Tim stands—he's ethical and competent.”

Rey Garduño, Albuquerque City Councilor, District 6: “I look forward to working with Tim to bring much needed jobs and economic investment to the SE Heights.”

Jerry Ortiz y Pino, State Senate, District 12: “I’ll be able to work with him up at the Legislature to pass bills that helps those who need it most—our children and families.”

Two announce bids for ABQ-area legislative seats

Posted 2/21/2008 01:30:00 PM

A Democratic business-planning consultant and Republican who is a former chairman of the state Commission on Higher Education announced today their candidacies for Albuquerque-area seats in the state Legislature.

Tim Keller, a Democrat who wants to “bring new and ethical leadership to Santa Fe,” is running for the state Senate District 17 seat currently held by Democrat Shannon Robinson......

“I am running for office because the needs of our district are substantial. As a state senator, I will fight for working families in our district,” Keller said in a news release. “It’s that basic. I will champion affordable and accessible health care, ethical government, better education, safer neighborhoods and new jobs.”

Keller, who would be representing a Southeast Heights district if he wins, is a native of Albuquerque. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame who, after college, co-founded a non-profit that seeks to help disadvantaged people in Cambodia. Today, Keller is a business-planning consultant and volunteers with groups that foster economic opportunities in the area.

Keller, who has been endorsed by the Conservation Voters of New Mexico, plans to officially kick off his campaign Saturday at El Norteno Restaurant, 6416 Zuni Road in Albuquerque, from 2-4 p.m.

STATE SENATE ACTION
Tim Keller
We're getting a couple of interesting Dem state senate primaries in the ABQ area. The latest is for the SE Heights seat of Shannon Robinson who has served since 1989. Thirty year old Tim Keller, a business planning consultant for government and nonprofits, says he is ready to take on the longtime incumbent because: "I think there is an opportunity for more economic development" in the district. He also cites health care and education as top issues.

Keller, a graduate of St. Pius High School, told me he moved into District 17 in May of last year, but pointed out he is a native of ABQ. The Notre Dame grad has won the endorsement of the liberal Conservation Voters of NM which had some success earlier this year in the Las Cruces city election.

The new contender says following college he spent a couple of years in Cambodia heading up a nonprofit group helping the disadvantaged. In recent years the city's SE has seen a burgeoning Asian population.

Robinson is a crusty old pro who has made foes in the left-wing of the party, but has deep ties to the district which includes the NM Expo. If he is going to run into trouble it will be in the primary with Keller. The district votes solid Dem in general elections.

Other Dem June senate primary battles in the ABQ metro include former ABQ City Councilor Eric Griego challenging State Senator James Taylor for a South Valley seat. Another South Valley contest pits businessman Michael Padilla against veteran Dem Senator Linda Lopez.

From the Tim Keller campaign:
Recently announced challenger Tim Keller turned in petition signatures today, filing his candidacy for State Senate District 17 in Albuquerque's Southeast Heights. He will face incumbent Shannon Robinson in the Democratic Primary on June 3, 2008. A total of 36 nominating signatures from voters in District were required; Tim turned in 336 -- ten times the number needed.

Tim notes, "Since I announced my candidacy, the outpouring of support from the voters I've met has been encouraging. In short, the feedback has been, 'we need a change in Santa Fe.' I'm running because we need leadership in Santa Fe that will fight for our district—someone who we can count on who will fight for healthcare and ethics reform. I am a candidate who will work for our district and not the special interests."

Tim Keller, a progressive Democrat from Albuquerque, is a business consultant and spends much of his time volunteering on the boards of several non-profit groups that foster economic opportunities in the Southeast Heights and around the New Mexico.
